Summer Music Training

Participants will have the opportunity to build
instruments such as this wooden glockenspiel
built by Manfred

In this course, Manfred will guide the participants deep into an exploration of music. Through work with instrument building, improvisation and composition, Manfred will open a landscape of clear musical experience. Exercises in listening and improvisation will challenge participants to transcend subjective musical experience, and to observe the objective forces that work on the human being through music.

This training will meet for three weeks of intensive work each summer for the next three years (2008 to 2010). Participants will be encouraged to continue their work in study groups, ensemble work, individual practice, composition and the pursuit of individual initiative. Manfred's work covers a broad scope, and he will tailor the specifics of the studies to the group and individuals. Below is a list of elements that he plans to include:

-Instrument building
-Study of building materials and tuning systems
-Ensemble improvisation
-Composition
-Study of the evolution of human consciousness and music history
-Playing music at selected locations in nature
-Development of listening through exercises
-Study of musical themes through drawing, painting and sculpture
-Individual work outside of class
